How to choose right stone mm size for your diamond tennis chain

The diamond tennis chain is a famous fashion piece that can complement any style from casual to formal. A stunning diamond tennis chain, has unmatched glitter and flash while still retaining its classy impression.

The name tennis chain arises from the 1987 US Open where a professional tennis star, Chris Evert lost her diamond chain during a match. The game was caused by request of Chris Evert and they started searching for her lost diamond chain. All the spectators witnessed this search and since that day the diamond chain is referred to the iconic diamond tennis chain.

A tennis chain consists of small diamonds or gems attached by a thin, precious metal chain. As it is considered as a piece of elegant jewellery, the chains are mostly made up of 14K to 18K gold, stainless steel or 925 silver. In the first place, it was known as line diamond chain due to the alignment of diamonds in line and still used in occasions today. Similar to many other pieces of jewellery, the diamond tennis chain has since earned a reputation that is more the result of a recognizable public event than its origin. The quality of a diamond tennis chain is determined by two important factors.

The first is the type of metal that is used to make the chain and the second is the size of the beautiful diamond resting on it. Multiple types of metals are used including yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, platinum, stainless steel and sterling silver. The other important factor to be considered is the size and quality of the stones.

The diamond tennis chain uses many small stones and they are measured in the total carat weight or a mm size. If diamonds are used, these diamonds chains can range from one carat in total weight to eleven carats, depending upon the size and number of diamonds. The diamonds can be measured in mm and it can be converted in carats.

Let’s cast our eyes on how we can covert the mm size of diamonds into carat weight. There are two ways for doing this conversion; we can use conversion tables for different shapes and a conversion formula for round diamonds.

To use the conversion table, first, we have to measure the diameter in mm of a round diamond and compare its value in carat which is present on the right side of the table.

Conversion Table for Round Cut Diamond

Size in mm

Weight in Carat

The estimation of carat vale of a round diamond can also be done by using Empirical formula.

 Carat Weight = Diameter x Diameter x Depth x 0.006

Where Diameter = length in mm of an imaginary line that is passing through its center and connects two points that are on opposite ends of stones edge.

The depth is taken as the distance in mm from top of round cut diamond to the bottom.

For diamonds that have a square outline usually known as Princess Cut Diamonds, we take length to width ratio equal to one. The measurement in mm of side of square cab be recorded and then comparative value in carat can be found in table.

Now after getting the comparison of dimensions in mm and weight in carat you can easily select diamonds which are perfect for your diamond tennis chain. When it comes to selecting a diamond for your special diamond tennis chain, size is everything. If you choose a diamond that’s too small, people might have to pull out a magnifying glass every time they want to admire it. On the other hand, you buy a stone that is way too big, you may not carry it for fear of theft. Choosing the right diamond requires a lot of thought, but you can follow a few simple rules, which will help you to pick the right stone.

  • Under 0.5 carat. This size is really only okay for everyday small tennis chain. While this size looks great embellishing a bigger central diamond on a chain or ring, it’s really too small to face alone.
  • Up to 1 carat. Properly presented, a 0.5 – 1 carat diamond can work fine for a medium Diamond tennis chain. Although this size is really better for a nice set of earrings. You can arrange them in a beautiful symmetrical form.
  • Between 1 and 2 carats. Not too large and not too small, this tends to be the preferred size for engagement rings but they will look perfectly fine on the diamond tennis chain.
  • Between 2 and 3 carats. Now the size is really big and you are getting into pendant range. A stone this size sported solo on a bare neckline will make draw attention, but not detract. You can use it for tennis, but it could be considered a bit flashy.
  • Over 3 carats diamond will fail drastically with very poor size selection and it will be very difficult to carry it.

Diamond tennis chains are beautiful jewellery pieces often given for anniversaries, holidays and special milestones. A bit like other jewellery, buying a tennis chain, whether for you or as a present for somebody else, is often a touch daunting. Since tennis chains are available in yellow gold, rose gold, alloy and an outsized sort of other precious metals, there are tons of various styles to settle on from. Add diamonds into the equation and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. It’s hard for a consumer to understand the way to think about the proper costs for a tennis bracelet.
